How did you get started in fitness and training? Do you have any pics to share?

Since the age of 16 I’ve been in stages of fitness. Mostly cardio and body weight exercises followed with light weights. Fitness videos. Jane Fonda and the like.

2009 vs. 2013!

How did you find the site? How has it changed your workouts?

This site was always popping up on other friends’ Tumblr blogs (Blissmanifesto and keeptriing) so I finally took the plunge this year to check it out.

Do you have any long term goals or direction you plan to take your training?

It’s changed my workout regime to try new things and work harder about perfecting technique. Learning new movements I didn’t think my body could do and gaining confidence with each new attempt.

As far as long term goals go my focus is strength and endurance, but on a small scale. I finished two half marathons this year. I”m looking to train and compete in a Highland Games for 2014. Maybe someday have the ability to compete in a mini triathlon!

What are things you’ve learned through trial and error? What areas do you hope to learn more about?

Learned through trial and error…hmm, what the body is capable of with minimal training. My first half marathon was a trial run and I was NOT prepared. I was practically crawling back to my vehicle when finished. Probably been beaned in the head one too many times with a kettlebell. It’s nice to have a spotter when learning how to work with a barbell for the first time.

Currently, where would you say your weakness lies? Where do you excel?

Being consistent is certainly something I can improve upon. I get a good few couple days, then tend to trail off and get lazy because I’m feeling a bit of DOMS action. As far as excelling, I’m getting better at pushing myself to complete an exercise with I’m in the midst of it. “Come on! You’ve gone all this way. Do NOT give up now!”

What motivates you?

Motivation comes in so many forms. I’m getting stronger. My body is changing. I see others on Fitocracy and the lengths they go to keep going. Making sure I stay fit and healthy for my children and possibly grandchildren. Also all their friends! Yeah, I’m THAT mom :-D

Are you using any supplements or special dietary changes to achieve your goals?

All I take is a multivitamin and calcium pill. Diet consists of FOOD. Sometimes “naughty” foods. Mostly as whole and green as I can make it. I’m also Ovo-lacto vegetarian.

If you could give advice to someone starting off, what would you tell them?

ASK QUESTIONS. Do not be afraid to question everything. Do your research. Make Google your friend. If you can, find a buddy who shares your passion to be healthy and enjoys exercise like you. Don’t be afraid to try something new, but it’s okay to keep it simple if it suits you.

What’s your ‘secret weapon,’ the thing that pushes you or you feel gives you an edge?

My secret weapon? Staying centered. Keeping the balance of life. There are many things that make up one day. Make sure to give time to what you can and let go what you can’t.

What has the overall impact of Fitocracy been in your life?

Fitocracy’s impact reminds me that I am an individual in a collection of great bodied people. Groups that share common likes and support that is unmatched by any I have seen thus far.

One thing I want people to take away from my story is…

Take this above anything else in this spread: Love your body, it’s the only one you’ll ever get.
